You are now at the last of the care certificate standards and in this section we will cover infection control.

In a workplace it may be necessary to take additional measures when supporting people who are known to be carrying some harmful microorganisms to protect others from contamination. There are many ways at work where you could by poor infection control, aid in the spread of infections. As infections can be spread with direct or in-direct contamination and even through the air, it is very important to protect your self, your collegues and those you care for against the risk of infections.

One way you can pass infections on is if you are unwell. If you have cold or flu symptoms such as a runny nose, an upset stomach or skin infections, you should speak to your manager before reporting for work.

If you have diarrhea or vomiting you should not attend work until you have been free from symptoms for 48 hours.

You may think that you are fine to work, but if you pass the problem to someone you care for their defenses will not be as strong as yours and they can become very ill or in extreme cases, maybe die.

In this section we will look at the types of infections and the ways that you can help to prevent their spread by effective infection control and following agreed ways of working at all times.

One part of this section you have to be assessed as competence in the workplace and this is standard 15.1b where you need to demonstrate effective hand hygiene. You will learn this on this part of the course, then you practice it to finally pass the section.
