Even though the awareness of autism over the past 100 years is greatly increased, people with autism still face a lot of stigma on a day-to-day basis. Studies have shown at least two-thirds of children with autism have faced some sort of bullying in school. Autism in many cases is a hidden disability, this means that when you look at a person, you can't immediately tell if they have a condition or a disability, for example, if they are in a wheelchair or have a hearing aid. Autism is not the only hidden disability, in fact, there are many examples including anxiety, schizophrenia, chronic pain, and chronic fatigue. One way that a hidden disability may be identified is by wearing a green-and-yellow sunflower lanyard. Stigma surrounding autism also changes depending on the country the person with autism is in. For example, even though South Korea has the highest autism rate of any country in the world at 2.6%, in some South Korean cultures, autism is seen as a hereditary disorder where standing out is problematic. It is not just those with autism who face stigma as well, parents or carers of those with autism have been seen to face some stigma.An example may be out in public when the person with autism is having an outburst, and onlookers just give disapproving glares or rudely tell you, "You are an awful parent, because you can't control your child." What a lot of people forget about autism is it is a life-long condition, which means that many adults around us in day-to-day life may be autistic. The problem with this is that nowadays there is not much support available. Once someone with autism turns 18 and can no longer be seen by their paediatrician, not only can this cause problems with the introduction of a new doctor and the problems surrounding building a relationship with them, but non-pediatric doctors tend to have less knowledge surrounding autism and the different areas of the spectrum. As a result, people with autism tend to rely heavily on charities such as the National Autistic Society and Ambitious About Autism.
