Keith, I want to do an ability test with you. I want to find out what upper body strength you have got and what lower body strength. If you have got upper body strength, you will be able to reposition yourself in the chair or in the bed and push yourself topside of the chair. And if you have got lower body strength, you might be able to stand for me, yes? So it is really important before we stand anybody up, we need to find out if they have actually got the strength to do it. Yeah? Okay, so Keith is sitting beautifully in the chair. He is sitting nice and upright there. So I can see that he has got no core muscle problems there. He is not leaning right into the chair, very frail, and no, he is sitting up there beautifully. So we actually know that Keith can probably get up anyway. But anyway, let us have a little go.

So Keith, what I would like you to do is, I want you to put two arms on the chair, and I want you to push yourself up. Okay, using those arms. Wonderful, wow. That takes a lot of strength to be able to do that. Okay. So that has proved to me that you have got upper body strength. But let us just say the person that you are working with can not do that. So here is something else that you can do. So I am going to make sure that I have got a stable base, okay? Because I do not want you to push me over, alright? And then, what I would like you to do, Keith, I want you to put your hands on my hands and I want you to push down as hard as you can. Okay, beautiful. And then turn your hands around, and then I want you to push up as hard as you can. Now, I am not putting too much force on there because obviously, I do not want to break your wrists, but you just put a little bit of... You know, just to put that resistance on there. Alright, so that has proved to me you have got upper body strength. But not only that; there is a few things. You have got equal strength on both sides. So there is no weakness on aside. You saw what I was doing. You heard what I was doing, and you actually complied. So from doing that tiny, little test, we got a lot of information, yeah?

Alright. Now I want to find out what is happening with the lower body, with your legs. With manual handling, you always get consent. So is it okay if I put my hand on your leg? Alright. Okay, so Keith, I am going to come down, I am going to keep my spine in line. Okay, I am going to come down. And what I would like you to do, Keith, I want you to lift your leg as high as you can. Beautiful, excellent. And then again, this side. Beautiful. Okay, so what we have just done again, you have got equal strength both sides. You were able to lift that leg up. Therefore, you used these big quad muscles here. So you have shown that you have got strength between your hip and your knee. Alright, but what is happening down here lower legs? Alright, so if you have got weak lower legs, you are not going to be able to stand. So what I would like you to do, Keith, I want you to lift your leg to reach my hand. Alright, and I am just going to push down a little bit and then you push down on my hand. Beautiful. You can feel those muscles working. And then we do the same this side. So lift. Okay, and then down. Beautiful. So again, you have shown that you have got really good strength there. So you should be able to walk, yes? We should be able to get you off that chair, maybe to assist you, enable you to get up and stand.
