Being cold for any length of time is a serious health risk - particularly for those who suffer from dementia especially if they are not very active and have poor circulation as they may feel cold but they may not realise it. Draught proofing and insulation will help keep the rooms warn and also encourage the person to wear extra layers of clothing

To ensure a person sleeps well at night it may be necessary to limit daytime naps and provide a range of stimulating activities, so as to avoid them dozing off during the day if they are bored. It may also be necessary to avoid avoiding stimulating drinks such as tea and coffee at a night time and encourage regular exercise during the day.

When a person has memory loss smoking not only damages their health - it can also mean an increased fire risk if they leave cigarettes unattended or drop them if they doze off. It has been known for some people with dementia to forget about smoking if cigarettes and ashtrays are removed. However, if the person stops smoking, they may become tense and irritable which may also add to their symptoms. If a person does smoke the people around them should make the environment as safe as possible for example, by replacing matches with disposable lighters.

Alcohol - people with dementia can become more confused after a drink, so it may also be necessary to limit the amount they have. Care should also be taken as alcohol may not react very well to any medication they are taking. It may be that the person with dementia seems to be drinking too much, this may be because they've forgotten how much they've had. Therefore it alcohol may have to be kept out of reach and sight. Low alcohol or non-alcoholic substitutes, or watered down alcoholic drinks may be offered as alternatives.

With smoking and Alcohol, it is important to balance the issue of the person's right to enjoy a pleasurable activity against the risk.
